Brighter Sound is a creative music charity based in the North of England, working across the UK. Our activity supports people through music, promotes diverse talent and acts as a catalyst for change in the music industry.  We produce creative music projects, events, residencies and showcases engaging with the wider UK music industry and run a diverse range of programmes that connect people through music and creativity. Our latest major initiative, “Both Sides Now” is an ambitious three-year programme to support and sustain gender equality across the landscape of music, supported by Arts Council England’s Ambition for Excellence fund.
Our mission is to stimulate and support the creation and performance of new music throughout the UK and to ensure that this music is enjoyed by a wide audience. Over the past 15 years we have proved ourselves as a significant force in supporting pioneering musical activity. Since March 2000 we have supported over 5,300 new music initiatives to the tune of over £23.6 million. We do this through open grant schemes which are available to musicians and organisations four times per year and partnership programmes which we lead in response to specific needs and gaps in funding. Because of our specialist knowledge of the music sector, our support is seen as an indication of quality and innovation. We are also proud to be widely respected as an approachable, adventurous, and straightforward organisation and to have established a strong track record as funder of a broad range of activity – from unsigned band showcases and professional development programmes to music commissions and composer residencies.

As a music development organisation, based in Kings Cross' Tileyard Studios, Urban Development plays an integral role in the growth of urban music in the UK. Combining business acumen with an understanding of youth culture, we stand at the crossroads where the creativity of underground new music meets the music industry. The Urban Development Music Foundation, our charity arm, focuses on educational work. We lead with a hands on approach to opportunities and nurture young artists, as well as emerging professionals, to prepare for sustainable careers; in an industry where audiences have the appetite, and critical faculty, to appreciate the best that urban culture has to offer.
Suicide is the single biggest killer of men under 45. For ten years, The Campaign Against Living Miserably (CALM) has taken a two-fold approach to tackling the issue: we provide free and anonymous support for men who are down or in crisis 7 days a week with our helpline, and we campaign for cultural change to tackle out-dated stereotypes of masculinity that prevent men seeking help.
Many men feel forced to endure tough times without societal permission to open up or find support that works. CALM’s research shows that while 67% of females tell someone about going through depression, only 55% of males do the same. The result? 12 men on average take their own lives every day.
Since CALM was founded a decade ago, awareness of male suicide has quadrupled. CALM has prevented more than 1000 suicides and taken 200,000 helpline calls to date. This shows men can find the words, they do want help and inspiration to find a way through, even though the definition of their role in the world that remains inflexible.
So we continue our work to change culture – together with brands, bands, individuals, families and workplaces.
Now we’re moving beyond the rallying cry to open up. We’re empowering men to reject living miserably. We’re working to build a generation who believe that society’s idea of your gender should not limit what or who you can be in life. Through the worlds of art, sport, comedy, business and music we aim to give a platform for men to cut away the restrictions on self-expression, to celebrate living.
